Avencion – Proposed Alternative Energy Solution for Health Facilities

Zambia in the last decade has been experiencing severe power deficits from its national electricity grid supplied by ZESCO. This has resulted in frequent and prolonged load shedding to cope with the strain on the grid power. Health facilities have not been spared. Healthcare facilities require 100% energy uptime particularly for health management information systems to enable access to electronic health records among other power requirements for healthcare service delivery.

Avencion is collaborating with the Southern Africa Energy Program (SAEP) to offer alternative energy solutions in support of the ministry of health. The alternative off-grid energy model seeks to abstract health facilities from installation, operations and maintenance of power backup units. This proposed model will operate on the following principles.Energy service providers invest in the cost of the assessments, infrastructure, installation, and maintenance needed to enable the energy for the health facility to operate key functions.

  • Provide monthly alternative energy services to the health facilities, or monitoring system performance only.
  • Energy service provider maintains ownership of equipment or provide Ministry of Health lease-to-buy / build-operate-transfer options; provide O & M and management support.
  • Pay-as-you-use model for provincial health offices for their health facilities; paid thru the G2G funding mechanism with the US government
