DREAMS (Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-Free, Mentored, and Safe Women)
This is an ambitious initiative funded by USAID and PEPFAR that explicitly connects economic empowerment and the building of social assets to the reduction of HIV incidence in young African women.
Electronic Health Monitoring
The project uses data from health budgets and service points to show how financial resources are allocated at the point of care to enable more effective decision making. This system deals specifically with programs focused on health service delivered nationally.
HIV Retention Program
The Avencion Retention Programme is a digital innovative approach being implemented with the Ministry of Health in Lusaka, Southern, Western, Luapula, and Northern Provincial Health Offices with support from PEPFAR, CDC, and USAID to improve the uptake of anti-retro therapy for people living with HIV, with the goal of helping clients suppress their viral load to improve their health outcome.
Infrastructure and Human Development
Avencion and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in collaboration with the Government of the Republic of Zambia’s Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, conducted a roundtable workshop on Infrastructure with Human Development in Zambia. REMS (Routine Efficiency Monitoring System)
Supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and developed by Avencion in partnership with FHI 360 and Zambia’s Ministry of Health, REMS is an innovative e-health platform designed to improve the efficiency of HIV/AIDS care delivery across Zambia.
The system aggregates data from national financial and health information systems to provide near-real-time estimates of spending per patient across over 325 clinics. By surfacing variations in care costs, REMS empowers health officials to:
- Identify high- and low-performing facilities
- Target inefficiencies in service delivery
- Make data-driven decisions for optimal resource use
Beyond data, REMS delivered significant social impact:
- 80 young Zambians (ages 21–29) contributed to the platform’s development
- 36 completed a year-long analyst training in health analytics, finance, and tech
- Graduates have gone on to full-time employment, entrepreneurship, and higher education
REMS not only strengthened Zambia’s health system but also helped launch the careers of young professionals—merging healthcare innovation with economic empowerment.
Proposed Alternative Energy Solution
Avencion is collaborating with the Southern Africa Energy Program (SAEP) to offer alternative energy solutions in support of the ministry of health. The alternative off-grid energy model seeks to abstract health facilities from installation, operations and maintenance of power backup units.
REMS (Routine Efficiency Monitoring System)
The REMS project, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and developed by Avencion in partnership with FHI 360 and Zambia’s Ministry of Health, is an innovative e-health platform designed to improve the efficiency of HIV/AIDS care delivery.
REMS aggregates data from financial management and health information systems to produce near-real-time estimates of spending per patient at over 325 clinics. This empowers health officials to identify cost variations across facilities or regions and make data-driven decisions to enhance resource allocation.
By tracking cost differences and performance over time, the platform helps planners pinpoint inefficiencies and optimize care delivery.
Social Impact: The platform was built with the help of roughly 80 young Zambians (aged 21–29). Among them, 36 completed a year-long analyst training program in health analytics, finance, and technology.
Graduates have since transitioned into full-time roles, launched businesses, or pursued further education. REMS not only strengthens the health system’s resource management but also builds capacity and creates economic opportunity for Zambian youth.
