FINANCIAL ANALYST INTERNS

Location: Lusaka, Zambia

Employment Type: Internship / Full-Time

Positions: 3

Reporting To: Senior Finance Team

ABOUT THE ROLE

Avencion is seeking a motivated and analytical Financial Analyst Interns to support the existing finance and operations team in financial analysis, budgeting, reporting, project costing, and financial data management.

The intern will work alongside the existing team to help prepare and analyze financial information, support project and program budgets, monitor expenditure, and provide useful financial insights to support planning and decision-making.

This opportunity is suitable for a recent graduate or final-year student who wants to gain practical experience in financial analysis within a professional, project-based environment.

KEY LEARNING AREAS

The interns will be learning on a rotation basis this is means that interns will be learning on various projects

1. Financial Analysis & Reporting

  • Support the preparation of monthly and periodic financial reports.
  • Assist in analyzing income, expenditure, costs, and financial performance.
  • Prepare financial summaries, schedules, and management reports.
  • Identify significant variances between budgets and actual expenditure.
  • Support the preparation of financial dashboards and other management information.
  • Assist with financial data collection, cleaning, validation, and analysis.
  • Conduct basic trend and ratio analysis to support management decision-making.

2. Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Support the preparation of organizational, departmental, and project budgets.
  • Assist with budget-to-actual analysis and variance reporting.
  • Support cash-flow projections and financial forecasting.
  • Assist project teams in tracking expenditure against approved budgets.
  • Help identify potential budget pressures and underutilization.
  • Support preparation of budget revisions where required.

3. Project & Donor Financial Support

  • Support financial monitoring of donor-funded and project-based activities.
  • Assist in tracking project expenditure, commitments, and available balances.
  • Support project costing and financial planning.
  • Assist in reviewing supporting documentation for project expenditure.
  • Help ensure project financial information is accurately recorded and properly allocated.
  • Support preparation of financial information required for project and donor reporting.
  • Work with program and project teams to ensure financial information is aligned with project activities.

4. Accounting & Financial Operations Support

  • Assist the finance team with reconciliations and financial schedules.
  • Support review of accounts payable and receivable information.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate financial records.
  • Support the preparation and organization of documentation for audits and financial reviews.
  • Assist with tracking invoices, payments, receipts, and other financial documents.
  • Support the maintenance of orderly electronic and physical financial filing systems.

5. Data & Excel-Based Analysis

  • Use Microsoft Excel to analyze and present financial information.
  • Develop and maintain spreadsheets for budgeting, expenditure tracking, and financial analysis.
  • Support data verification and identification of inconsistencies or errors.
  • Prepare tables, charts, and summaries that make financial information easier to understand.
  • Assist in improving existing financial reporting templates and tools.

6. Compliance & Internal Controls Support

  • Support the finance team in maintaining existing financial controls and procedures.
  • Assist with checking that transactions are appropriately authorized and supported.
  • Support compliance with organizational policies and applicable Zambian statutory requirements.
  • Assist with preparing documentation required for internal and external audits.

7. General Team Support

  • Work closely with the finance, operations, and program teams.
  • Provide financial information and analysis when required.
  • Participate in financial planning and review meetings where appropriate.
  • Undertake other finance and analytical assignments as assigned by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, Banking and Finance, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in financial analysis, business finance, budgeting, and data analysis.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of financial statements and basic accounting principles.
  • Understanding of budgeting and financial reporting.
  • Basic understanding of financial ratios and financial analysis.
  • Familiarity with accounting software or financial management systems is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of the Zambian business environment and statutory financial requirements is an added advantage.
  • Previous exposure to project-based, NGO, consulting, SME, or development-sector work will be an advantage, but is not mandatory.

  • Fourth-year students currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, Banking and Finance, Financial Economics, or a related field.
  • Recent graduates who have completed a relevant Bachelor’s degree and are seeking practical exposure in financial analysis and business finance.
  • Candidates with a strong interest in financial analysis, budgeting, financial reporting, project costing, and data analysis.
  • Candidates who are comfortable working with Microsoft Excel and are interested in developing their financial data analysis skills.
  • Individuals who are willing to learn, ask questions, receive guidance, and work alongside an existing professional team.
  • Candidates who can demonstrate good numerical ability, attention to detail, organisation, communication, integrity, and confidentiality.

Previous work experience is not required. Academic projects, coursework, research, volunteering, or other practical exposure related to finance, accounting, business, data, or projects will be considered an advantage.
